    Slow WiFi at Home? 7 Fixes Before Upgrading Your Internet

    When a client tells me their internet is slow, my first question is always: "Is it slow everywhere in the house, or just in some rooms?" Their answer tells me whether to call their ISP or look at their router.

    Most "slow internet" complaints in 2026 turn out to be slow WiFi, not slow internet. Here are the seven fixes I run through before recommending anyone pay for a faster plan.

    0. First, confirm the problem is actually WiFi (not your internet)

    Plug a laptop directly into your router with an Ethernet cable. Go to fast.com or speedtest.net and run a test.

    • Wired test matches your plan's advertised speed? Your internet is fine. The problem is WiFi or a specific device — keep reading.
    • Wired test is much slower than your plan? The problem is your internet connection. Call your ISP, or check whether a better one is available — see Frontier Fiber vs Xfinity for CT homes and small offices.

    If your wired speed is good, the rest of this post applies. If it's not, no amount of router tweaking will help.

    1. Reboot the router (the right way)

    Yes, this old chestnut. But there's a right way:

    • Unplug the router's power for 60 seconds. Not 5 seconds, not 30 — a full minute. This drains capacitors and forces a fully clean boot.
    • If you also have a modem (separate box, common with Xfinity), unplug it too. Plug modem back in first, wait 90 seconds. Then plug router back in.
    • Wait 3 minutes for everything to come fully up before testing.

    Routers get gunky after weeks of uptime. A quarterly reboot is good hygiene.

    2. Move the router to a better location

    This is the biggest free improvement most people miss.

    The wrong places to put a router:

    • In a basement or utility closet (signal can't get up through the floor and walls)
    • Inside a media cabinet with the doors closed
    • Behind a TV or in the middle of an entertainment center
    • Next to a microwave or cordless phone base
    • Against an exterior wall (half your signal goes outside)

    The right place:

    • Centrally located in the home, at chest height or higher
    • Out in the open — not in a cabinet
    • Antennas vertical (if it has external antennas)
    • At least 3 feet from large metal objects (refrigerator, filing cabinet)

    Move the router and immediately retest. I've watched a router relocation alone double speeds in the far rooms of a 2,000 sq ft house.

    3. Switch to the 5 GHz network (or use the right band)

    Most modern routers broadcast two networks: a 2.4 GHz band and a 5 GHz band. Sometimes also a 6 GHz (WiFi 6E/7).

    • 2.4 GHz: Slow (max 100–200 Mbps real-world), but reaches farther through walls.
    • 5 GHz: Fast (500+ Mbps real-world), but doesn't punch through walls as well.
    • 6 GHz: Fastest, very short range, requires WiFi 6E or 7 device.

    If your network names look like MyWiFi_5G and MyWiFi_2.4G, you have separate bands. Connect your phone, laptop, and TV to the 5G one when you're close to the router. Reserve 2.4G for smart-home devices that don't need speed (smart plugs, light bulbs, doorbells) — these often only support 2.4 anyway.

    If your router uses a single SSID with "band steering" (newer routers), this is automatic — but band steering doesn't always pick correctly. If you have the option to split the networks in your router's app, do it.

    4. Check who else is on your channel

    In a neighborhood with many homes close together, every router is fighting for the same airspace. If your 5 GHz channel is shared with five neighbors, performance tanks.

    Download "WiFi Analyzer" on your phone (free app, both iOS and Android). Open it. Look at which channels are crowded and which are open.

    Then log into your router (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 in a browser, or via the router's app — the password is on the sticker on the bottom). Find wireless settings → channel. Change from "Auto" to whichever open channel you found:

    • For 2.4 GHz: stick to channels 1, 6, or 11 only — these don't overlap.
    • For 5 GHz: any low-traffic channel works, but try 36, 48, 149, or 161 first.

    Save and let the router reboot. Retest.

    5. Update your router's firmware

    Most routers ship with old firmware. Manufacturers patch bugs and improve performance constantly.

    Open your router's app or admin page. Look for System → Firmware Update or similar. Update if available. Reboot.

    Routers more than 5 years old often stop getting firmware updates entirely. If your router was made before 2020 and the manufacturer no longer ships updates for it, that's a sign it's also a security risk — replace it.

    6. Add a mesh node (or replace an old router)

    If you've tried 1–5 and dead zones still exist in your house, the router itself isn't reaching far enough. Two paths:

    Add a mesh node to your existing system (if it supports mesh). The Frontier eero, Google Nest WiFi, Netgear Orbi, and most modern routers let you add a second node that extends the network seamlessly. Place the second node about 2/3 of the way from the main router to the dead zone. ~$60–$120 per node.

    Replace the router entirely if yours is more than 5 years old, doesn't support WiFi 6 (802.11ax), or is a hand-me-down ISP gateway. A modern WiFi 6 mesh kit runs $150–$400 depending on home size.

    For a typical 1,500–2,500 sq ft CT home, I usually recommend a 2-pack of TP-Link Deco or eero 6+. For larger homes or thick plaster walls (common in older CT homes), a UniFi mesh setup gives more headroom but requires more setup expertise.

    7. Test specific devices that seem slow

    If everything else seems fine but one device is slow, the device might be the problem, not the network.

    • Old phones, tablets, and laptops with WiFi 5 (802.11ac) or older WiFi 4 (802.11n) chipsets cap out at much lower speeds than newer devices.
    • Smart TVs older than 2020 often have weak WiFi radios; running an Ethernet cable to them solves it permanently.
    • Devices physically far from the router behind multiple walls naturally lose signal — see step 6 for mesh.
    • A device running a background sync or download (a phone backing up to iCloud, a PC doing Windows Update) eats the bandwidth other devices want.

    Run speedtest.net on each device near the router, then in its usual location. Compare. If the device tests fast next to the router and slow elsewhere, it's a signal-reach issue. If it tests slow even next to the router, the device's WiFi hardware is the limit.

    When upgrading internet actually helps

    After working through the above, if your wired speed test is already maxing out your plan (e.g., you're paying for 300 Mbps and seeing 280 Mbps wired), and you still need more — then upgrading your internet plan makes sense.

    FAQ

    My WiFi is fine, but Zoom calls are choppy. Why? Zoom and other video calls are sensitive to upload speed and latency, not raw download speed. If you're on Xfinity or another cable plan, your upload is probably ~20 Mbps regardless of your download tier — which gets divided across everyone in the house. Fiber's symmetric upload fixes this.     Will a WiFi extender help my dead zones? A traditional extender works but typically halves the speed through it. A mesh node is much better — same approximate cost, dramatically better performance.

    Do I need WiFi 7? For most homes in 2026, no. WiFi 6 (or 6E) is plenty. WiFi 7 routers are still expensive and most devices don't support it yet. Buy WiFi 6 today; upgrade in 4 years when the device side catches up.

    Should I use the router my ISP provided? For small homes, yes — modern ISP routers are decent. For larger homes or if you want more control, buy your own. Frontier's included eero is one of the better ISP-provided units.

    Why is my WiFi fast on phones but slow on my laptop? The laptop has older WiFi hardware than your phone, the laptop's antenna is in a worse position (laptops have small internal antennas), or the laptop's WiFi driver needs updating. Try updating the WiFi driver from your laptop manufacturer's site.
