"Which ISP should I switch to?" is one of the questions I get asked most often by clients in central Connecticut. Frontier Fiber is now widely available in most of central CT, going head-to-head with Xfinity (Comcast). Both promise fast internet. Only one actually delivers what most users need in 2026.

Cable companies advertise download speeds. Fiber companies advertise symmetrical speeds. That difference matters more than people realize.

Download speeds look comparable. Upload speeds are not even close.
This matters for:
- Cloud backups (iCloud, Google Drive, OneDrive uploading thousands of photos)
- Video calls that need to send a clear video stream, not just receive one
- Security cameras that record to cloud storage continuously
- Working from home with file sync, remote desktop, and screen-sharing
- Streaming to Twitch / YouTube if anyone in your house does that
- Hosting a Plex server or similar that streams out to other devices
If anyone in your home uses any of the above, fiber's symmetric upload is the real win, not the headline download number.
Real-world speed tests I've run
Across about a dozen install jobs in Bristol, Plainville, Berlin, and Southington in the last six months:

- Jitter: 2–4 ms
Frontier's latency is consistently 2–3x lower. For gaming and video calls, that's a noticeable difference. Cable modems add a baseline of latency that fiber doesn't have.

Frontier wins on both promo and post-promo pricing. The bigger structural difference: Frontier doesn't have data caps. Xfinity does (1.25 TB/month on most CT plans, with overage fees if you exceed it — easy to hit if you stream 4K and back up to the cloud).
Install timelines
Going off what I've seen scheduling installs for clients in early 2026:
- Frontier: Most new accounts schedule within 3–5 business days. Same-day windows are common.
- Xfinity: 7–14 days is typical. They'll push self-install kits to skip this, which works for some setups but not all.
Reliability
This is the one place Xfinity often wins, but only because they've had longer to build out their infrastructure.
Frontier outages in central CT (last 12 months, from my client base): 2 outages, both under 2 hours, both due to a physical fiber cut.
Xfinity outages in central CT (same period, same client base): 4–6 outages depending on the town, ranging from 30 minutes to 6 hours. Most cable-system, some traceable to congestion during peak hours.
Both are acceptable for home use. For business-critical uptime, neither alone is enough — you'd want a backup connection on a different ISP regardless.
Equipment provided
Frontier includes an eero-based router. The eeros are good — fast WiFi 6, mesh-capable if you add nodes, decent app. Most clients are happy with the default install.
Xfinity includes their xFi gateway. It's adequate. WiFi performance is mediocre compared to a real router. Most of my Xfinity clients end up putting the gateway in "bridge mode" and using their own router.
If you bring your own router, both ISPs let you do that. Frontier's ONT outputs standard Ethernet → any router. Xfinity needs an approved DOCSIS 3.1 modem from a short list (which adds a one-time $100–$200 hardware cost).
When Xfinity might still make sense
- Frontier fiber isn't available at your address. Always check first.
- You're bundling with Xfinity Mobile. Xfinity's cell plans are cheap when bundled, which can offset internet pricing.
- You're locked into a current Xfinity contract and the early termination fee outweighs switch savings.
In every other case I encounter — switching to Frontier saves money and improves performance.
When Frontier is the obvious choice
- Anyone working from home who depends on a stable video call or file sync
- Households with 4K streaming on multiple devices plus continuous background uploads

- Households whose Xfinity bill has crept above $85/month
- Small business / home office where uptime and upload matter
The switch process
If you confirm Frontier fiber is available:
- Sign up online and schedule the install (3–5 business day window typically).
- Don't cancel Xfinity yet. Keep both active for the first few days while you confirm Frontier works as expected.
- Day of install, Frontier tech comes out, runs fiber, sets up the ONT and router. ~2 hours.
- Test it for 24–48 hours under normal use. Run speed tests, check streaming, do a video call.
- Cancel Xfinity by calling 1-800-934-6489. They will fight you on the call. Stay polite, be firm, "I've switched providers." Return their equipment within 14 days to a UPS Store or Xfinity location to avoid a $200+ equipment fee.
Some clients prefer to handle the switch with overlap of just one day. Either works.
What you'll actually feel after switching
Most clients report:
- Cloud uploads (photos, file backups) finish 30–50x faster
- Video calls noticeably crisper, fewer pixelation/freeze moments
- 4K streaming starts faster and never buffers
- Online gaming feels more responsive (lower ping)
Download-heavy use (basic web browsing, downloading a single large file) feels about the same — both are "fast enough" for that.
The takeaway
For central CT homes and small offices in 2026, if Frontier fiber is available at your address, switching from Xfinity to Frontier is one of the highest-ROI tech upgrades you can make. Better speeds, better upload, lower latency, lower price, no data cap, no contract.
The only reasons not to switch are: fiber not available at your address, or you're locked into a bundle you can't escape. Worth checking either way.

FAQ
Will switching cause downtime? You can run both services in parallel for a few days. Once Frontier is confirmed working, cancel Xfinity. No real downtime if you plan it.
Will my email address change?
If you use a @comcast.net email, it stays accessible after you cancel — Comcast lets you keep that login. But this is a great time to switch to Gmail or another provider that isn't tied to an ISP.
What about TV? Cable channels? Frontier doesn't offer traditional cable TV. Most clients I install for are already streaming (Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, YouTube TV) and don't miss cable. An over-the-air antenna gives you local channels for free.
Can I keep my Xfinity Mobile cell plan if I switch internet? Yes. Xfinity Mobile is separate from internet service and can stay active. You lose the bundle discount, though, so do the math.
Is the install really free? Frontier waives the $99 install fee on most promos. Confirm during signup — should be $0 install if you book online with the current promo code.
